The Dependency Principle
Each layer of the pyramid depends on the layers beneath it. You cannot build citation readiness (L5) without topical authority (L4). You cannot build topical authority without entity clarity (L3).
Attempting to shortcut the pyramid — for example, investing heavily in authority signals while ignoring content structure — creates a fragile visibility position that will not sustain.
The Six Levels Explained
L1: Performance & Access
Can AI systems reliably access and parse your content? This foundational layer covers technical performance: page speed, crawlability, rendering, and whether AI crawlers can access your pages.
Without this layer, nothing above it matters. If AI systems cannot access your content, they cannot evaluate it.
L2: Structured Content

Clear structure allows AI to parse and extract relevant information efficiently.
L3: Entity & Schema
Does the web clearly define your brand entity? This layer examines schema markup, knowledge panel presence, and entity disambiguation.
Entity clarity is critical. Ambiguous brands get replaced by clearer alternatives.
L4: Topical Authority
Does your content demonstrate expertise across the category? AI systems evaluate depth, breadth, and consistency of content coverage.
Authority is earned through consistent, deep content that covers the topic comprehensively.
L5: AI Citation Readiness
Is the content formatted for citation by AI systems? This layer evaluates whether your content provides clear, quotable statements and structured data.
Citation-ready content is explicit, structured, and easy for AI to reference accurately.
L6: Brand Authority
Do external signals reinforce trust in your brand? The top layer evaluates backlinks, brand mentions, social proof, and demand signals.
This is the hardest layer to build but the most powerful for citation probability.
